Note | Flin Flon, Manitoba-Saskatchewan (pop. 7243) is a mining city on the Saskatchewan-Manitoba border, Canada. It is located at 54°46 N 101°51 W. The town's name is taken from the lead character in a paperback novel, The Sunless City by J E Preston Muddock. A prospector named Tom Creighton found the book in the wilderness. The story is about a man named Josiah Flintabbatey Flonatin, who piloted a submarine through a bottomless lake. Upon passing through a hole lined with gold, he found a strange underground world. When Tom Creighton discovered a rich vein of almost pure copper, he thought of the book and called it Flin Flon's mine, mercifully shortening the name. Flin Flon gained international notoriety in 2002 when the Government of Canada awarded a four-year contract to a Saskatoon company for the production of Medicinal Marijuana.53 |

(Witness) Note | On 3 September 1878 a memorial card was printed which states 'In memory of nearly 700 passengers who died on the 'Princess Alice' in the Thames off Woolwich, 3rd September 1878'; The sinking of the Princess Alice in 1878 was one of the most serious civil disasters ever in Britain. Seven hundred people died in a very short time, mostly of poisoning. They were almost all Londoners and came from every part of the capital. Although the accident took place on 3 September, the Muddocks are not named for another ten days. The Times reports on 13 September: Henry Creed Muddock, aged 7, son of Henry Grigson Muddock, of 120, Sussex Road, Holloway (already identified); buried as unknown; clothing identified by Daniel Bridegroom, cousin of the deceased. The party consisted of five, all of whom were lost. Witness stated that all the other members of the family were buried in London, and he wished to know what steps he ought to take to have the body of the deceased conveyed thither also. Further on we find: Harry Maddock, 120 Sussex-road, Holloway. Identified by Samuel Bridegroom, 133, St. John-street-road, Clerkenwell. I have been unable to identify the other three members of the party from the photocopies of The Times that I have been working from.6 |
